Bricklaying Shines at Careers Expo

The recent Herald Sun Careers Expo this month saw the ABBTF bricklaying stand generate a great deal of interest from students, parents and the general public over the three days.  More than 24,000 attended the annual event.

The ABBTF stand provided a Try-a-Trade which involved a constant stream of young people having the new experience of laying a brick or two.  The bricklaying section was part of the Master Builders (MBA) area, where other construction trades were also promoted.

Meet Michael Taylor, New ABBTF Victorian Field Rep

michael_taylorJane Alexander, Victorian Manager, welcomes Michael Taylor as a valuable part of her team to boost ABBTF’s presence in the field.

Michael has worked on both residential and commercial jobs as a qualified bricklayer which has prepared him well for his role with ABBTF.

As a Field Representative, Michael will match prospective apprentices and employers, run the Try-a-Trade at Careers Expos – giving students a hands-on experience, provide mentoring advice to employers and apprentices and ensure that ABBTF’s terms and conditions are met by employers applying for and claiming ABBTF’s Brickstart subsidy.

The Making of a Master Tradesperson

Bradley Lawson, Winner of Holmesglen TAFE’s Outstanding Apprentice Student Award – all Trades 2012 and consecutive winner of 1st year, 2nd year & best overall Bricklaying Apprentice Award. Also Bradley recently won the Master Builders Association Victorian Bricklaying Apprentice of the Year Award.

Dedication to precision and an acute eye for detail are just some of the qualities of Holmesglen’s 2012 Outstanding Apprentice Award winner, and soon-to-be qualified bricklayer, Bradley Lawson.

Annually, Holmesglen TAFE selects from across its entire student base (1,100 in 2012), one student from the total 15 trades, to be awarded its Outstanding Apprentice Award. At the 16th Annual Awards Festival Dinner at the Park Hyatt on 22 March 2013 Bradley Lawson’s award was announced to a large audience of training, industry and the guests of award category winners.
