Bricklayers Upskill: Learn How To Build Brick & Block Retaining Walls

Bricklayers and blocklayers in Tasmania have the opportunity to broaden their skills by attending a proposed short course on building masonry retaining walls. Contractors need to know the correct techniques and how to meet the standards relating to retaining walls.

Many contractors may currently choose to not quote for this work as they don’t have the skills or experience in this form of construction. However, such skills would add a valuable “string to their bow” when regular work in housing or the commercial market is less certain. We have seen low levels of building activity in the past, with bricklayers struggling to keep their businesses viable. This work could make a difference in such times.

Bricklaying Takes Higher Profile in Schools in 2016

ABBTF is joining force with the Master Builders Tasmania (MBT) to promote at secondary schools.  The annual MBT program to promote trades and careers in construction will now have the added flavour of bricklaying.

The plan is to include a young bricklayer (apprentice or recently qualified bricklayer) to speak with Year 10 students in class time at a number of schools throughout Tasmania.

Master Builders Tasmania has conducted its successful schools program for a number of years with the support of the Tasmanian Building & Construction Industry Training Board (TBCITB).  The program has been influential in providing young people with the information necessary to embark on a career in the building and construction industry.
