Sam Barratt Wins Tasmania’s WorldSkills

Sam Barratt has followed in his brothers footsteps by winning the Tasmanian Regional WorldSkills Bricklaying Competition on 27 September at TasTAFE.  Sam won the event from Jacob Homan from Launceston who finished a very close second and Samuel Wells from East Devonport who finished third.

Sam is employed by his father Colin Barratt whose other two sons, Ben and Matt, had previously won the Tasmanian event and competed in the National WorldSkills Competition in 2010 and 2012.  By winning the competition, Sam becomes eligible to compete in the 2014 National WorldSkills Competition in Perth.  The winner of the national event can then compete at the WorldSkills International Competition in Brazil in 2015.

Students Build Their Future in Bricks

Students at Wynyard High School are reinforcing their chances of employment by taking part in the recent ABBTF Step Out in Bricks Program.  The in-school learning experience involved 11 students undertaking an authentic program learning practical skills in bricklaying from local bricklayer Andy Hayhow on behalf of his employer, Wayne Singleton.

ABBTF was the principal sponsor together with regional business Austral Bricks from Longford which donated the bricks.

Tassie Apprentices Shine at Golden Trowel Competition

A Tasmanian apprentice bricklaying team mixed it with ‘the best’ at the 2013 CMAA Golden Trowel Competition in Coffs Harbour last month.  Apprentices Samuel Wells, Sam Barratt and their trainer Paul McKay from TasTAFE competed with teams from eleven other TAFE’s from across Australia.

The Golden Trowel Competition is run by the Concrete Masonry Association of Australia (CMAA) and has been held every two years for the past twenty years.
