Tasmania: The Home of Quality Bricklayers

Anyone visiting Tasmania knows it is home to many of the finest examples of colonial brick and masonry buildings in the country.

What is perhaps less widely known is that Tasmania also produces some of the best bricklayers in the country, playing a very important role in the local construction industry.

Tasmania Facing a Serious Bricklayer Shortage


Somerset bricklayer Max Groenewege with apprentice George Frankcombe and Matthew Bowen recently qualified bricklayer, both apprenticeships were supported with ABBTF funding.  

A recent article in the Examiner newspaper highlighted the current low numbers of bricklayers, with industry leaders expressing concerns of a serious shortage of bricklayers in the future.

Younger ‘brickies’ are entering the trade less frequently, with industry leaders citing concerns that Tasmania is facing a serious bricklayer shortage.
