SA’s Bricklaying Champion Matt Cheso has Job of a Lifetime

Australian Embasy & First Brick Laid with Aust FlagMatt Cheso from Murray Bridge, SA has competed in the WorldSkills Australia national competition in bricklaying in 2012 in Sydney and 2014 in Perth.  Matt performed well in Sydney and also won the ABBTF Gun Trowel speed test that year, following up with winning the Silver Medal in Perth last year.

This experience opened an unexpected door for Matt to be involved in building the new Australian Embassy complex in Bangkok.  The job offer and connection came through Troy Everett, WorldSkills International Bricklaying Chief Expert and another judge.

Subsidies to Support Employers taking on Apprentices

Story 3 Stack of 100 Dollar NotesBricklayers thinking about taking on a new bricklaying apprentice should be aware of the financial support available of up to $15,400 in the metropolitan area.

This package of industry subsidies is provided by ABBTF’s Brickstart Subsidy of $3,000, CITB $8,400 and the Federal Government $4,000.  If the apprentice is over 21 ABBTF provide an extra $2,000 payable on the completion of 1st Year to partly offset the higher adult pay rate.
