QLD Fields Strong Contingent at WorldSkills Australia 2014

splash2 FWAt the recent WorldSkills Australia national event in Perth, 18–21 September 2014, Queensland sent its biggest bricklaying contingent in years.  This consisted of three competitors: Toby Tosh (Wide Bay), Jack Sommerfeld (North Queensland) and Isaac Machin (Central Queensland).

There was also strong Queensland support on the judges’ front as well:  past national winner Todd Richards, ABBTF Queensland Manager Tony Bishop, TAFE Queensland’s Eric Davies and Central Queensland TAFE’s Peter Carr.  In addition, Andrew Hosking, Gympie bricklayer and employer was in charge of ‘the mud’, keeping up with the frantic pace of the bricklaying competitors.

ABBTF Builds Constructive Industry Partnerships

 

Story 2 Tony presentingABBTF is working alongside Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ) with the current Construction Industry Exchange mini conference that is taking place around Queensland during October and November. The Exchange is providing information on current and future challenges and opportunities for the construction industry.

Organisations participating in the event include ABBTF, QLeave, Queensland Building and Construction Commission, HIA, Services Trades Queensland, Mates in Construction QLD , Civil Contractors Federation and state and local departments.

Higher Skill Level Candidates Boost Success Rate of Pre-Employment Programs

Sttory 3 V2 Showing Coloured BricksOver the last 12 months ABBTF Queensland has delivered over 10 Pre-Employment readiness programs held on the Gold Coast, Toowoomba, Cairns, Sunshine Coast, Brisbane North and Brisbane South regions.

These courses have seen a higher standard of entry level candidates and a significant reduction of cancelled apprentices.  ABBTF Queensland will continue to run these courses in regions where there is a demand for apprentices and ongoing growth.  Excellent financial incentives are available to employers to take on an Apprentice. Brick and Block Industry Investing in QLD’s Future

“The push to encourage and train more bricklayers in the industry would not be possible without the significant support from ABBTF’s contributing manufacturers,” says ABBTF’s Tony Bishop.

“These manufacturers not only contribute financially, matching the small levy on bricks and blocks, but they also donate large amounts of products and resources to support the ABBTF trade training programs throughout the country,” he said.
