Central Queensland’s Night to Shine

On Wednesday 9 October 2013 the bricklaying industry in Rockhampton and Gladstone came together at the Criterion Hotel to celebrate recent successes for the region.

The night was well attended with over sixty guests including the Deputy Mayor Tony Williams, the Director of Studies at Central Queensland TAFE Gary Kinnon and newly appointed Vice Chancellor – Industry and Vocational Education and Training (DVC-Industry and VET) of Central Queensland University Nik Babovic.

Queensland Masonry Project Wins National Award

Bellbowrie Swimming Pool, winning commercial entry at the Think Brick Horbury Hunt Awards 2013.

The Bellbowrie Brisbane swimming pool project has won the Think Brick Horbury Hunt Commercial Award for 2013.  The project demonstrates the design possibilities when using brick as well as the important skills of bricklaying essential to a successful business.

The project was designed by architects, Bureau Proberts and the masonry contractor was J&L Bricklaying.  PGH Bricks and Pavers supplied the bricks and the builder was Tomkins Developments.

From Step Out to WorldSkills Winner

Isaac Machin is officially the Central Queensland region’s top apprentice brickie after winning regional WorldSkills bricklaying competition at CQ TAFE Rockhampton on May 7.

Isaac Machin of Mount Morgan, Phillip Lanyon of Rockhampton, Mitchel Boyd of Yeppoon and Tyson Johnstone of Boyne Island battled it out with mortar and trowel to create a wall-type construction from a template.

Jack Sommerfeld Takes Out NQ’s Regional WorldSkills Title

The third of Queensland’s Regional WorldSkills competitions for 2013 was held 23 July – the North Qld Regional Final – at Mackay TAFE’s new campus.  There were 6 contenders and taking out first place was Jack Sommerfeld – well done Jack!

Jack follows in the footsteps of Todd Richards, also from the Mackay region, who went on to be winner of the Australia National WorldSkills title, in Sydney in 2012.  More information on the Nationals is available in last year’s blog on the event, found here.
