Winning was particularly sweet for Todd as he was required to work with bricks. On site in Mackay, working for Col Sommerfeld, Todd normally only lays blocks. This makes his win even more meritorious, according to Col Sommerfeld.
“Peter Carr, who was in charge of the competition, told me Todd set out the WorldSkills job just as Peter would have done and that was the foundation for his win,” said Col.
“Todd has been close to our family since he was ten. He started with us as an apprentice and is now fully qualified. He’s something special.
“This is a family business and at the moment we have five bricklaying apprentices, including my twin boys who have just started. Over the years we have put through about 12 apprentices and we have been able to help young people with special needs,” Col added.
Col praised the ABBTF for its support with subsidies for apprentices and the assistance provided by Tony Bishop ABBTF’s state manager.
