The 2015 Golden Trowel Awards

The Concrete Masonry Association of Australia (CMAA), Australia’s peak industry body for concrete masonry manufacturers, recently announced that the team from North Coast TAFE – Coffs Harbour Campus had won the 2015 Golden Trowel Award.  TAFE teacher Mr Paul Venn led the winning team with apprentices Michael Bonar and Jacob Wade.  Organised by the Australian Brick and Blocklaying Training Foundation (ABBTF) and the CMAA in cooperation with TAFE, the Golden Trowel competition was held from 11 to 13 October at the Wollongong Campus of TAFE NSW – Illawarra Institute.

2015 Golden Trowel AwardsThe biennial Golden Trowel Award saw the best masonry apprentices from across Australia taking part in a unique team competition, where teams had to build a concrete structure with intricate detailing within a limited time.  This year’s ‘castle’ theme required the teams to include the shape of a trowel in the main wall, with paved steps and two turrets.  The teams were judged based on precision, craftsmanship and conformity to the design specifications.

In the light of ongoing challenges in meeting the bricklayer shortage in NSW, the industry joined together for discussions on the evening of Wednesday, September 23 at Rooty Hill RSL. The night was co-ordinated by ABBTF NSW, and manufacturers Adbri Masonry, Austral Masonry, Austral Bricks, Baines Masonry, Boral Bricks, Namoi Valley Bricks and PGH Bricks and Pavers. The three hour meeting was attended by 80 guests including builders, bricklaying contractors, Group Training Organisations and industry associations.

Female Apprentice Bricklayer: Support Program for Employers

ABBTF has announced an additional support program to encourage the employment of new female apprentices in bricklaying.

The Female Apprentice Bricklayer (FAB) support will entitle employers to a $2,000 subsidy on the completion of first year. While the support has just been launched, employers of current female bricklaying apprentices who commenced from 1 July 2015 will also be eligible to claim the support when their FAB apprentice’s first year is completed.

Apprentice Pay and Employment in the Workplace

The new Fair Work Quiz will help test your knowledge of workplace rights and obligations owed to employers and apprentices.  Each module contains a series of questions on common workplace issues.  You’ll get a score for each module you complete (if you choose to work through the approx. 15 mins for each), as well as useful feedback, and links to more resources.  Once you’ve completed all modules you can download a Certificate of Completion.  To make it easy we have re-produced the Bricklaying and Blocklaying pay rates and conditions and the Quiz details at our ABBTF and Become a Bricklayer websites.  Fair Work is here to help you understand your wages and conditions, so give it a go.
