Bucket Batching for Best Results and Cutting Costs

batch-bucket1Good bricklayers are using bucket batching when mixing mortar to get consistent strength, colour and most importantly, save money!!  The method of using buckets to mix mortar means that savings are made in cements where a whole 20kg bag can be saved on every fifth batch.  One bricklayer said this saves him $100 a week or $5,000 every year.

The standard mortar mix (M3) is six sand, one lime and one cement.  Using a shovel can cause problems with quantities being inconsistent leading to issues with strength, cleaning and colour variation.  Filling the mixer by shovel can cause a mortar mix to be too strong or too weak.

School Based Apprenticeships Offer Best of All Worlds to Would-be Tradesmen

For parents and students concerned about career choices having to be made too early in the teen years, the ASBA program is a winner.

The Australian Schools Based Apprenticeship (ASBA) allows a student to complete their High School Certificate (HSC) at year 12 while also having commenced a trade qualification.  Should there be a change of heart during in or after Year 12 and they want to pursue a non-trade direction, they have the HSC as a base from which to start.

Re-invent Your Career in Bricklaying

reinvent-your-career1ABBTF is assisting a number of mature age people to re-start their careers as bricklayers, following the “Re-invent Your Career Expo” at Darling Harbour last month.

The expo ran over two days, with over 1,000 jobs offered through 90 stands, and was attended by more than 5,200 people ranging from mid-20’s to early 40’s.

The level of interest at the careers expo was more than expected with many applicants keen to pursue bricklaying as a career change.


ABBTF has provided advice and with the benefit of resumes, arranged trials with bricklayers, which we expect will lead to a number of sign-ups as apprentice bricklayers.

Employers are also aware of the benefits of mature apprentices who have a good work ethic, learn quickly and fit well into the bricklaying team environment.

ABBTF offer a $1,000 mature age incentive to employers in addition to the $5,000 Brickstart subsidy and bonus, additional incentives are also available from the Federal Government.
