Why do we need a bricklayer training scheme? back to top
The shortage of skilled bricklayers is causing construction delays and quality issues. The average age of a bricklayer is 45 years and apprentices who are completing their training are not matching people retiring and leaving the industry.
Who contributes to the scheme? back to top
The scheme is jointly funded by brick and block manufacturers and Builders, tradesmen and the general public who purchase bricks and blocks. They contribute $1.50 per 1,000 for clay bricks and 7.5 cents per square metre for concrete masonry.
Note: In Western Australia double height clay bricks attract a levy of $3 per thousand and there is no levy on the sale of concrete masonry.
How is the levy collected? back to top
The levy is shown as a separate line item on the invoice. The manufacturers send the levy and their matching contribution to ABBTF to fund the programs.
How are the funds spent? back to top
ABBTF invest in promotion, 40 hour Step Out Programs in schools, Try-a-Trade, pre-apprenticeship and pre-vocational training support and provide subsidies to lower the cost of apprentice employment.
We also offer a free service to the trade of recruiting new apprentices, providing advice to bricklayers and recommencing out-of-trade apprentices.
What subsidies are paid for employing apprentices? back to top
Bricklayers employing a apprentice are subsidised by one of two ways over the term of the apprenticeship:
- $3,000 for directly employing an apprentice.
- $3,000 for employing an apprentice through a Group Training Organisation.
Where are the funds spent? back to top
Funds collected in each state are spent in that state. The scheme also operates in regional areas to increase apprentice enrolment numbers and support employment
What are the benefits of the scheme? back to top
The increased apprentices and skilled bricklayers created by the scheme will reduce construction delays, increase quality through training and attract good quality people to the trade and the industry
What results has the scheme achieved to date? back to top
Increased number and quality of people in training at pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship level. Increase apprenticeship completions and reduce attrition rates. Lifting the image of the trade.
